What compelled BC writer Kate Harris and her friend to embark on an epic journey, cycling over ten thousand kilometers of the Silk Road – the ancient network of trade routes linking Asia with the Middle East and Europe?

What pushes some of us out to explore world – and what is behind this desire? How do travel and exploration get transformed into literature? What stories do borders tell, and what restrictions do they place on nature and humanity?

Kate Harris, the author of the new travel memoir Lands of Lost Borders, joins the Salt Spring Forum for a wide-ranging conversation about writing, travel, and much more.

Harris has also written for The Walrus, Canadian Geographic, and The Georgia Review, among other publications. A Rhodes scholar and Morehead-Cain scholar, she has won several awards for her nonfiction writing. She lives off-grid in a log cabin in Atlin, British Columbia.
