Echo: Memories of the World

Created by the Gryphon Trio, in collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from Canada and Norway, this new multimedia presentation explores the flow of knowledge and cultural treasures through the generations. As we face the dangers of climate, conflict, and environmental degradation, the work draws on resilient stories from Canada, Norway, Austria, and Mali, combining live and pre-recorded music, spoken word, and film.

Music by Indigenous composers Andrew Balfour and Eliot Britton, and European composers Victoria, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Henrik Hellstenius. Words by Alison Mackay, Reneltta Arluk, and Sámi poet Rawdna Carita Eira. Video by Dylan Toombs.

Performed by mezzo soprano Marion Newman, and the Gryphon Trio. With pre-recorded performances by Nordic Voices vocal ensemble from Norway, and Malian kora player Diely Mori Tounkara.

Thank you to the Reinette Foundation for sponsoring this performance. Supported by ArtSpring’s Exploration Fund.

Gryphon Trio Gryphon Trio is firmly established as one of the world’s preeminent piano trios. For more than 25 years, it has earned acclaim for and impressed international audiences with its highly refined, dynamic, and memorable performances. The Trio’s repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary, and from European classicism to modern-day multimedia. It is committed to redefining chamber music for the 21st century.

Violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist Jamie Parker are creative innovators with an appetite for discovery and new ideas. They have commissioned over 85 new works, and they frequently collaborate with other artists on projects that push the boundaries of Classical music.

The Trio tours regularly throughout North America and Europe. It enjoys longstanding relationships with prominent arts incubators and presenters like Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Orford Music Academy, Music Toronto, Ottawa Chamberfest, and Festival del Lago International Academy of Music in Ajijic, Mexico. Gryphon Trio often performs triple concerti with the world’s major symphony orchestras and smaller chamber orchestras.

Marion Newman – mezzo soprano Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations, English, Irish and Scottish mezzo-soprano Marion Newman’s “beautiful voice has heft and power, but at the same time an innate sweetness” (Opera Canada) and she has been noted as “a show stealer” (BBC Music Magazine). In her Irish debut with Cork’s Opera-2005 in the title role of Carmen, she was widely praised for her “superbly sinuous sexuality” and “as a very exciting new talent” by the Irish Examiner. She returned to Cork to appear as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and again performed this role, delighting the critics, with Opera Lyra Ottawa, at the National Arts Centre.
